The international Bicycle Film Festival from New York is making its inaugural entry into South East Asia in Singapore neConceived by four youths in 2012 during their final year in NTU, See and Be Seen was held as Singapore’s first ever night cycling safety initiative.
In partnership with organisers of a regional charity ride – Firefly Night Race – the 2012 edition saw over 300 cyclists participating in its cause of encouraging cyclists to be properly equipped for night cycling.
Now spearheaded by organisers of the Firefly Night Race, See and Be Seen held its annual safe night cycling campaign over an 84 km and 42km route. The 2014 route will be flagged off at the East Coast Big Splash@Playground with Guest of Honor Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Environment and Water Resources.
Previous editions of See and Be Seen had raised funds for non-profit organisations such as Life Community Development and youths from the Special Olympics Singapore.
The 2014 special cause encourages foreign workers to be safe and be seen when riding and the See and Be Seen team will be giving out 1000 lights to these foreign workers at their dormitories leading up to the actual event day on 8 Mar 2014.
Mr. Tan Chuan-Jin, Acting Minister for Manpower will be riding again this year with the participants as Special Guest.xt month from 20th-22nd August 2015. The Singapore edition is organised by sports marketing and lifestyle events management company, Firefly Connections SE Asia.
As part of a 3 day festival, this events took place at 2 historical venues (Maj Aviation Building next to Old Seletar Airport and The Old Alkaff Mansion) across Singapore hosting film screenings, art exhibition, bike runway shows and bicycle gala dinner and an after dark party.The BICYCLE ART exhibition held at Seletar Aerospace View features an exhibition celebrating the bicycle through photography exhibition and bicycle art installations. Artists include cycling photographer Danial Hakim of Peloton Images Asia and bicycle restoration artiste Poon Kng Joo of Soek Seng.
Films from various countries including Clean Spirit that is an inside story of the Argos-Shimano race team showing that winning the Tour de France without any performance enhancing drugs and others.
The Bicycle Film Festival is a platform that has been a catalyst for the urban cycling movement around the globe, spreading bicycle culture to over 50 cities and all major continents. In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founding Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York. He was inspired to turn this negative experience into a positive one.
